The series follows Rakka, a newly hatched Haibane (灰羽?)(a being resembling an angel), and other characters in the city of Glie (グリ guri?), a walled town with a single gate through which only a mysterious group, the Toga, are allowed to enter or exit.
Yoshitoshi ABe has acknowledged that Haruki Murakami's novel Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World was an influence on his stories around the haibane. In essence, the "End of the World" narrative contains many of the same ingredients and settings, such as a city people not allowed to leave, a wall, a river, a library and a clock tower.

Bartender (バーテンダー Bātendā?) is a Japanesemanga series written by Araki Joh and illustrated by Kenji Nagatomo. Its focus is a genius bartender who uses his talents to ease the worries and soothe the souls of troubled customers. The manga was first serialized in the Japanese manga magazine Super Jump. The manga was later adapted into an animewhich was broadcast between October and December 2006 on Fuji TV. In February 2011, TV Asahi began airing a live action television version starring Masaki Aiba of the Japanese pop groupArashi in the lead role. The Drama has mostly an original plot but follows the manga.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the first of five books in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxycomedy science fiction "trilogy" by Douglas Adams(with the sixth written by Eoin Colfer). The novel is an adaptation of the first four parts of Adams' radio seriesof the same name. The novel was first published in London on 12 October 1979. Between Pacific Tides is a 1939 book by Ed Ricketts and Jack Calvin that explores the intertidal ecology of the Pacific coast of theUnited States. The book was originally titled "Between Pacific Tides: An Account of the Habits and Habitats of Some Five Hundred of the Common, Conspicuous Seashore Invertebrates of the Pacific Coast Between Sitka, Alaska, and Northern Mexico".
